Overview
Hunza Valley, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan province of Pakistan, is a stunning valley nestled in the Karakoram ranges, bordering China, Afghanistan, and the Wakhan Corridor. Its people are believed to have Central Asian origins, speaking Shina, Burushaski, and Wakhi languages.
Historically, Hunza was an independent principality for over 900 years, evidenced by the Baltit and Altit forts, and became part of Pakistan after the monarchy was dissolved in 1973. It was briefly under British influence between 1889–1891 after the conquest of neighboring Nagar Valley.
The valley is divided into Upper, Lower, and Center Hunza, each with its own villages and dominant languages—Wakhi in Upper Hunza, Shina in Lower Hunza, and Burushaski in Center Hunza.
